spring / rain
48 x 48 px, 8 colours
Been a while hasn’t it! I keep telling myself I should draw more, but I just keep putting it off again and again. I know, I know, I’m being really bad. I should draw more and I should sprite more. I’m gonna do my best! I actually have another display pic lined up as well.
I decided for this that I was actually going to use some reference material. I collect artbooks and keep telling myself I have them so that I can get ideas, but again, just procrastinating like a mofo. Finally cracked one of them open (Apple Selection - Fall) and found a few pictures of girls in raincoats, which I thought looks really cool. I threw the backdrop in just to get myself a bit of practice with low pixel background work. The ripples were a lot of fun!
Anyway, I can’t say I’m back in the saddle, but at least I have something to show for myself. I’ll get back to drawing actual pictures sometime soon too!
Nothing to really write about this, it’s a display pic. I somehow managed to once again mess the hell up and make it at the wrong resolution (I made it at 64, twitter takes 48) so the one on the left was the original and the one on the right was redrawn from scratch. I really can’t say which one I like more. I worked very hard to make sure I got the right ambiguous expression. It’s pretty much a self-portrait, since my hair is getting long again. It’s easier to tell what headphones I’m wearing in the higher resolution one (Pioneer HDJ-500W), as is the little City of Toronto pin in the bottom right.
So apparently Tumblr hates when I try to put two pics properly, so here’s the “high res” version, I’ll post the “proper” one after.

PHEW. As some may know, I have a yearly tradition of working very hard on a Halloween picture (even if I had not drawn anything else for an entire year), and then a further tradition of NEVER FINISHING IT. Well this year I’m a NEW MAN, and I’ve gotten off my butt to finish this one off.
Am I happy? I’m not sure. I sort of enjoyed it when it was just black and white, and the colouring was sort of rushed in certain bits. If anything, I’m absolutely most happy with the lantern and the little pumpkin guy, but not so happy on the background and composition in general.
Story-wise, I’m not sure completely sure, but here are a few theories:
A) He’s taking the kids trick or treating, guiding them with a latern and sheltering them with an umbrella
B) Those are voodoo dolls hanging from his umbrella that he’s (possibly inadvertantly?) controlling the trick or treaters with
C) The kids are attracted to candy in those dolls hanging from his umbrella, which are pinatas
D) Some other thing completely, I’ll let you fill this blank in.
Here’s to another good year, and I’m going to keep working on making more art, trying more new things, and most of all having lots of fun!

Starhythm’s new STRH-PLEIADES line represent the perfect junction of style and sound for those who want professional quality clarity without sacrificing form or function. The STRH-PLEIADES are built around Starhythm’s flagship line, the legendary DJ favourite STRH-SUBARU-7. While it’s form has been slimmed down and given a retro-inspired look, the STRH-PLEIADES still delivers almost the same crisp highs and booming bass you would expect from its big brother. The STRH-PLEIADES themselves are wrapped a classic looking brown leather, with highlights wrapped in real wool tartan available in seven differen variations (STRH-PLEIADES-RD pictured with optional bow accessory attached). A 1.5m cord with 3.5mm miniature jack makes this the perfect headphones for portable travelling with portable music players, while a 2m extension and optional 1/4” jack are provided for DJ use.

I suck at composition. I spent probably as much time messing around with the background and spacing of this thing as I did drawing it (the drawing part was tonnes of fun by the way). I’m still not that happy with the composition and layout, and I think there’s piles of room for improvement.
Either way, I forgot what, if anything, I had to say about this. The sort of Pop’n Music-ness wasn’t intentional at first, but it looked great the more I piled it on. I sort of which I remembered what exactly I did to achieve some of those effects. The headphones weren’t meant to be the focus of the piece (the tartan print is), but I couldn’t think of anything to write about in the flavour text portion.
Oh and sadly on that note, the STRH-PLEIADES don’t actually exist. I would love a pair though. Does $150 seems a bit cheap if they’re wrapped with real leather and wool, and if they actually sound good?

One of my favourite topics to draw is music. That sounds a little bit funny, (there’s a famous quote that talking about music is like dancing about architecture) but I find it a wonderful source of inspiration. I don’t understand the creation of music in the least, so it’s like some sort of beautiful magic to me.
Anyway, this piece is based on the song ルネサンス (Renaissance) by Soutaiseiriron. It’s hard for me to put into words, but the song has a mysterious and sombre mood to it, but also a cloying pensive longing feel as well. Every time I hear it (and I’ve heard it hundreds of times now in the making of this piece) I feel like closing my eyes, smiling and swaying side to side. I can’t explain it, so I tried to draw that feeling. The song’s lyrics themselves are entirely about math (for instance the lyric above: “A bit of Renaissance math/Even and odd are friends/Happy Renaissance math/Variables and primes are acquaintances”), so I tried to incorporate that into there, and of course the whole Renaissance idea, which I mostly BS’d.
On the technical side, I drew this mostly to practice my skills. Working on inking with crow quill, and painting using Photoshop, as well as playing around with effects. I’m pretty happy with it in general, and I think I’m really getting the hang of the different parts of making a good drawing. The background is blown up of some of Leonardo Da Vinci’s notes. His handwriting is gorgeous o.o Side note for people who know me: the original sketch had headphones, I had to fight every urge I had to not ink them in. I think I made the right choice.’

OH GOD, DEAR TUMBLR FRIENDS, PLEASE SEE A LARGER VERSION (like this or this) OR ALL MY HOURS OF WORK WERE WASTED.
It’s been a long long while, but I’ve decided I should probably be putting things up on Deviantart again! Oh wow, it’s literally been years and years and years. Whoosh. Thankfully(?) I haven’t really drawn all that much in the intervening time, and most of it went the way of the dodo when one of my hard drives failed o.o. I’ll consider backing some of what I’ve drawn up on Dev, but otherwise you can find most of the newer stuff over at my woefully unadorned Tumblr.
This piece was fun, and probably the most time I’ve spent on one single drawing in a long long time. To be more accurate, I didn’t spend that long on the DRAWING bit, pencils and inks in Sai, the pixelly explosion part in GraphicsGale using the NES palette, but the colouring…
The colouring literally kept me up at night. My original thought was to colour it “manually” in Gale using a limited palette, but I had no idea how to make this a functionally working thing. I wanted to give it a real vibrant prismatic rainbow-y look like KEI, Tsukushi, or ami, but of course it’s a lot harder than it looks. After hours and hours of experimenting I ended up using a fixed width hard edged brush with 55 opacity and 40 flow, then the mosaic filter (Pixellate -> Mosaic) at 20 pixel width for most of it. The dress still came out sort of muddy, but I really really like the eyes (which were sort of accidental anyway).
Anyway, I hope you enjoy it, I really enjoyed making it.

Mixed media (Sai, india ink on printer paper, Photoshop 7.0)
and I’m not what I appear to be.

WOOOOOOOOOO EMO. The less to be said about the that better!
Also fun working with mixed media! I drew the original sketch in Sai, printed it out and inked over it with a crow quill and india ink. It was my first time working with either of those, and it was actually sort of fun. I much prefer traditional inking over digital inking, you get a sort of feedback that you don’t get with the computer. Anyway, I only inked half the drawing, then actually tore it in half to get the tearing effect. It was painful, and I was so worried I’d fuck it up. I scanned it over a black piece of paper to make sure the tear looked “right” when overlaid on a black background.
I then printed a SECOND copy of the sketch and inked it the OTHER half, which I scanned and then did a quick invert in Photoshop for the black half. I grabbed some random texture from some free texture site to kill the monotony of black.
Anywho, I’m not sure I’m happy with the result (it’s SOOOO high school), but it was definitely fun working with new media in new ways, so all in all, GREAT SUCCESS. In some ways I sorta wish I just went with the white half in its entirety, since it’s an alright drawing (the other half is uuuugly).
I’ll have other less emo drawings up soon, hopefully!
Just a bunch of quick doodles. It feels nice just doodling without anything in mind. Been a while since I’ve drawn on a tablet.
Profile pic with HD remake! I accidentally drew my new twitter profile pic at 32 x 32 resolution (left) instead of the proper 48 x 48 resolution (right)! The horror! I had to redraw it from scratch, kind of like one of those HD remakes, only not terrible. Fun fact: I drew this using only the NES palette, which while super limited (WHERE THE HELL IS RED, WHAT IS WITH THAT GROSS YELLOW), is also amazingly fun to play with and robust assuming you don’t need certain colours. As to why I chose that palette? I don’t know, I guess I’m a masochist!
Oh, and if you want to see the original resolution, you can come follow me on twitter!
